Comprehensive access solutions: Access only for parking customers

April 20, 2022

The traditional form of access control consists of a lock and key. Access to a building or room is only granted to those who insert the appropriate key into the lock provided. Of course, such access solutions are problematic: a key can be lost, used by unauthorized persons or illegally duplicated. It therefore makes sense to bring access control up to a modern standard, and not just for parking areas. This increases convenience and security in the parking garage or underground car park.

Access with the parking ticket

One now established form of electronic access solution is to use the parking ticket as a key for the parking garage doors. For this purpose, an access code can be printed on the ticket, which must be entered into a number field on the door. With more modern systems, there is also the option of scanning the valid ticket at the door to gain access to the property.

Access via RFID

RFID is an abbreviation for "radio-frequency identification", i.e. identification by means of the transmission of electromagnetic waves. In such a system, the access solution consists of a mobile transponder and a receiver integrated into the locking system. Depending on the technical design of the system, the transponder must be scanned on the device. When using NFC technology ("near field communication"), it may also be sufficient to approach the previously locked door with the transponder to open it. Access solutions using RFID are particularly suitable for private parking areas and the parking areas of companies or public authorities.

Access solutions for ticketless parking in a publicly accessible parking garage

In publicly accessible parking garages that work with a ticketless system thanks to license plate recognition, an alternative solution is needed for electronic access control. A code posted inside the parking garage does not always prove to be useful: anyone who does not remember such a door code can no longer reach their car. It also becomes problematic if there is a change of driver in the parking garage, i.e. the car is parked by one person but later picked up again by another. One obvious solution is the license plate number. If the number is entered correctly in a field on the door, access to the parking garage is granted. Technically, this could also be linked to the payment of parking fees: anyone who pays their parking fees at the parking machine after entering their license plate number will then also unlock the access doors so that they can reach their vehicle.

What are the advantages of electronic access solutions?

Depending on the location, size and affiliation of the parking garage, unsecured access can pose a security risk. Particularly at night, openly accessible parking garage doors can act as an invitation to dubious or even criminal contemporaries. Even specially designated women's parking spaces in a brightly lit area near the entrance cannot completely eliminate the problem. Some access solutions even make it possible to personally identify the people present in the parking garage at a certain time.

Compared to purely mechanical key systems, electronic access solutions are much more difficult to overcome. At the same time, parkers do not need to carry a key for the doors. Access to the vehicle is still possible around the clock or at preset times. If necessary, settings can be made to the system at any time to further increase security or convenience for customers.
